20 Vietnamese Su

TWENTY VIETNAMESE SU

Coin's year-1953
Country- South Vietnam
Year of mintage- 1953

Hi friends. This my 20 Su coin from Vietnam. Like the Deutsche mark coin this coin has also got some historical importance.

This coin was one of the first coins of the South Vietnamese Dong. 1 Dong was subdivided into 100 Su. The mintage of 10 Su, 20 Su and 50 Su coins started in 1953. Till 1955 dual currency system was practiced in South Vietnam. Both French Indochinese Piastre and Dong were used till 1955. The Dong was used in parts of Vietnam which was not under the control of communist forces till 1954. From 1955 the Dong became the official currency of South Vietnam, which was created after the partition of the state of Vietnam. This coin was used till 1975. In 1975 South Vietnam was defeated by North Vietnam and a new currency was introduced. The new currency was Liberation Dong. 1 Liberation Dong was equal to 500 South Vietnamese Dong.
Lucien Georges Bazor

This coin was designed by the Frenchman Lucien Georges Bazor who was the chief engraver at the Paris mint from 1930 to 1958.

After researching about the history of this coin online I just realized that this coin has travelled through long pages of history and is now on my palm. I bought this coin yesterday in the marketplace for a few bucks. Now, within 24 hours this coin has become one of my favorites as it has got a historical flavor like some of my other coins such as the German Mark.

Now, let's come to the specs. This coin is extremely light with a weight of just 2.2 g. This aluminum coin has a diameter of 27 mm and is round in shape. It has got a smooth edge. The reverse side of this coin has an image of a rice plant and has the lettering "VIET-NAM" on the top and "20 SU" at the bottom. The obverse side of the coin has the portrait of three women facing left and has got the lettering "QUOC- GIA VIET-NAM" on the top and "1953" in the bottom. About 15 million 20 Su coins were minted.

This coin gave me a deeper insight of the Vietnamese history. I'm really starting to love this coin. Thank you friends for reading my blog and I hope you too will like this wonderful coin.
